Indigenes of Goi Community in Gokana LGA of Rivers State, Nigeria have received compensations over an Oil spill that occurred years ago.
A Dutch branch of Friends of The Earth, had in 2008 brought the lawsuit on behalf of a farmer, CHIEF ERIC BARIZAA DOOH, against Shell, following oil spills that destroyed Community.
A long legal battle which lasted over 13yrs ended in victory for the Farmer.
The Dutch Appeal Court sitting in Hague, had ordered Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) to pay compensation to the People of Goi Community.
Natives of Goi Community have confirmed payments in region of Two Hundred and Eighty-five Thousand Naira (₦285,000) each, as compensation paid to individuals.
